Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family of Ford, they were taken care of by her mother, grandmother as well as godparents. While she was a small girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessive compulsive disorder and suffered from anxiety due to the word association. Ford started to become attracted to acting as a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of days, she realized that the school was not for her. Ford reapplied to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth application she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. But Tate soon began to garner attention for her stand-up comic and added stand-up comedy to her resume in the year 1996.
