
At the age of 27, he enrolled in the National Theatre School of Denmark at which point he graduated in 1995. He was also a part of The Killing, a drama show that was broadcast across the world. He was later featured in Those Who Kill II and Borgen III, two other highly acclaimed Danish dramas. He also played the lead role in Sherlock the series, a BBC drama in which He played Charles Augustus Magnussen, whose blackmailer. He played Russia's president on the American television show House of Cards. He won an International Emmy Award in 2018 for his role in Danish television drama Herrens Veje, which was broadcast in the UK in 2019 as Ride Upon the Storm. Mikkelsen can speak fluent English, Swedish, German as well as Danish as well as his mother tongue. He also has picked up various accents. Mikkelsen has stated that his brother and he learned English initially by listening to Monty Python recordings and watching comedy sketches.
